The availability of quality internet is no longer a luxury but a need in education, business, and communication. However, in most communities, the cost of accessing the internet is still a significant challenge. This is exactly what PluxNet Fibre aimed to solve with the Zandspruit Hotspot Initiative, which is a community-based internet project that seeks to provide uncapped internet at an affordable cost.
The Vision: Connectivity That Works for the Community
The Zandspruit initiative was founded on a very simple yet effective vision: to bring better internet closer to the people who need it, without the need for contracts or monthly payments.
The initiative replaced traditional home fibre connections with Hotspot Internet Services, a time-based and uncapped internet service that can be accessed via Wi-Fi hotspots placed throughout the Zandspruit area.
This approach gives the community complete control over their internet usage, as they can access the internet instantly using vouchers.
Infrastructure Development: Reliable Coverage and Community First
In support of this project, PluxNet Fibre has rolled out 25 operational Wi-Fi hotspots in the Zandspruit Extension 9 region.
These hotspots have been strategically positioned to provide optimal coverage in the region.
The main features of the infrastructure development include:
- Community-based coverage using omnidirectional access points
- Optimized coverage using both 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectrums
- Heat mapping and site surveys to eliminate dead zones and ensure network stability
The network is technically sound and ready for extension to other parts of Zandspruit.
Affordable, Uncapped, and Flexible: How the Voucher System Works
The voucher system is at the core of the campaign, and it is a time-based voucher system that is meant to be simple and affordable.
Residents are able to buy hotspot vouchers from local vendors and spaza shops, which means that the economic impact of the project is retained in the community.
The vouchers available are:
- R5 – 24 hours of uncapped internet
- R49 – Weekly uncapped internet
- R99 – Monthly uncapped internet
After connecting to the PluxNet Fibre hotspot, users are able to access the internet by simply redeeming the voucher online and getting unlimited internet access for the desired period.
To ensure that the quality of the service is maintained and that it is fair, each voucher:
- Is tied to one device only
- Expires after the validity period
- Must accept the Terms and Conditions
Empowering Local Vendors Through Partnership
One of the success factors of the Zandspruit campaign was the partnership with the local vendors. PluxNet Fibre partnered with the local vendors, giving them the opportunity to become official voucher resellers.
This has the following advantages:
- New income streams are created for small businesses
- Trust is built through local points of sale
Testing, Readiness, and Launch
Prior to widespread public launch, the project conducted controlled user testing with local Residence. This served to ensure:
- Smooth voucher redemption
- Stable roaming between hotspots
- User-friendly connection experience
Additionally, posters were designed for vendor shops to ensure users could connect.
